Biography

Tommy Kim is an art director, and colorscript artist based in Los Angeles, working primarily in animation and visual storytelling. His work focuses on the use of color, light, and environment to support narrative clarity and emotional pacing.

Born in South Korea and raised in the United States, Kim studied Entertainment Design at ArtCenter College of Design. He has worked on feature films and animated series for studios including Netflix Animation, Skydance Animation, Warner Bros. Animation, and Gaumont. He served as production designer and art director on the award winning animated series Stillwater, contributing to its visual language and emotional tone.

In parallel with his studio work, Kim maintains an active plein air painting practice in gouache. This practice informs his approach to animation and teaching, emphasizing observation, visual simplification, and intentional color choices.

Kim has taught internationally through his bestselling online course on gouache painting and brings an industry grounded, critique focused approach to the classroom. He encourages students to develop strong visual fundamentals and thoughtful storytelling skills applicable across animation and design.
