The Earth from Space exhibition reveals how space photography informs knowledge of planet ecology and climate crisis

Opens March 9, 2021 on ArtCenter College of Design Williamson Gallery’s website

Fans of images from Earth satellites, and people interested in the environment will not want to miss The Earth from Space, an exhibition blending scientific knowledge about our beautiful planet, the challenges it faces, and the solutions that are happening. Guest curated by Jay Belloli, the exhibition opens online March 9, 2021 on the Alyce de Roulet Williamson Gallery website (http://www.artcenter.edu/about/exhibitions/earth-from-space.html) at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena.

“Jay has organized five space photography exhibitions in the past, two of which took place at the Williamson Gallery as part of our ongoing exploration of ArtScience themes,” said Stephen Nowlin, director of the Williamson. “Images of Earth taken from space over the past 50 years have broadened our self-image as citizens of a larger universe, and at the same time presented our planet as a fragile mosaic of interdependent systems we must carefully preserve.”

“My hope is that the exhibition helps people better understand the recent science and beauty of the Earth, the challenges of climate change, the progress that has happened, and what we can do as individuals to help our planet,” said Jay Belloli. “As far as I know, this is the first exhibition in our country that has explored aspects of climate change and recent actions to make our world better.”

A catalogue is being published in connection with the exhibition, including all the images in the show and fascinating interviews with three scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) who study some of the most important aspects of our planet.

After the Williamson Gallery presentation of The Earth from Space, it’s expected that it will become an on-line presence at several other science museums nationwide.

Belloli is a prolific curator, organizing contemporary art and astronomy exhibitions in Southern California for almost 40 years. He has served as the director of gallery programs at the Armory Center for the Arts and interim director at the Pasadena Museum of California Art.

The Earth from Space exhibition advisor is scientist Dr. Randii R. Wessen, who was also the advisor for Mars: Astronomy and Culture, which was also presented at the Williamson Gallery. The exhibition is dedicated to Dr. Wessen, and to all the scientists who study the effects of humanity on our planet. The catalogue is dedicated to the memory of Jurrie van der Woude, who was advisor on five space photography exhibitions, and worked as the senior image coordinator in JPL’s Public Information Office.

The Earth from Space has been made possible by support from Jim Crawford, Bradley Friedland, the Bill Hannon Foundation, Karen Hillenburg, Wendy Munger and Leonard Gumport, Jeff and Joan Palmer and other individuals; a grant from the Pasadena Art Alliance; and through the generosity of the Williamson Gallery Patrons.

The Earth from Space is a project of the Fulcrum Arts Emerge Fiscal Sponsorship Program.
