In Focus: Artwork by ArtCenter Staff

The first ever exhibition of work by ArtCenter College of Design staff

May 12 through May 31, 2023
On view at the Hutto-Patterson Exhibition Hall

Opening reception: Thursday, May 18, 2023 from 6 until 8 p.m.

In Focus: Artwork by ArtCenter Staff, a collaborative, transdisciplinary exhibition will feature artwork created by staff members across departments at ArtCenter College of Design. Planned by a committee within ArtCenter’s Staff Council, the exhibition opening May 12, 2023, will highlight the creativity of the College’s staff members, increase the visibility of staff creative work to enrich campus life and provide opportunities for engagement across disciplines and departments.

"Students, faculty and the public may not know that many ArtCenter staff members are also artists and designers,” says Jennifer Faist, artist, director of collections and systems at the ArtCenter Library and the staff art exhibition committee chair. “In Focus shines a spotlight on staff creativity, giving a glimpse at another side of staff as they juggle work, life and artistic pursuits," she continued.

In Focus: Artwork by ArtCenter Staff is funded by the President’s Office at the College.

Karen Hofmann, ArtCenter’s president and chief executive officer, is a designer and an advocate for creativity on campus. “One of my goals as president is to bring our community together, encourage a culture of belonging and build points of collaboration across campus,” Hofmann said.

Through galleries and exhibitions of all types, the ArtCenter community demonstrates creative abilities that set a standard of excellence among art and design institutions. ArtCenter Staff Council’s mission is to foster an environment that empowers and values all College staff.

About ArtCenter Staff Council: Staff Council was started in 2013 with a mission to create an environment where the entire staff is empowered and valued. Staff Council acts as an advocacy body for all ArtCenter staff members, directly providing recommendations to the president on issues and policies affecting staff.

About Hutto-Patterson Exhibition Hall: The Hutto-Patterson Exhibition Hall features a diverse rotation of art, sculpture and mural exhibitions within South Campus’ thriving collaborative nucleus for the visual arts. Bathed in beautiful natural light streaming in from a spectacular skylight, the space is a jewel nestled in the home base for ArtCenter’s Fine Art and Illustration departments at the 870 building. Renovation of the former U.S. Postal Service property was made possible in part because of the generosity of the Hutto-Patterson Charitable Foundation, providing a dramatic atrium space in the center of the building to showcase work created by students, faculty and visiting artists through a carefully curated lineup of exhibitions accompanied by public lectures and special events.

About ArtCenter: Founded in 1930 and located in Pasadena, California, ArtCenter College of Design is a global leader in art and design education. ArtCenter offers 11 undergraduate and 10 graduate degrees in a wide variety of art and design disciplines. Renowned for both its ties to industry and its social impact initiatives, ArtCenter is the first design school to receive the United Nations’ Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status. Throughout the College’s long and storied history, ArtCenter alumni have had a profound impact on popular culture, the way we live and important issues in our society.
