ArtCenter College of Design Celebrates Fall 2022 Graduating Class

At a graduation ceremony on Saturday, December 17, ArtCenter College of Design will celebrate 180 graduates after they proudly walk across the Pasadena Convention Center stage in front of a potential audience of 5,000 people. ArtCenter President Karen Hofmann will preside over the ceremony and confer the degrees. In addition to hearing from the Student Leadership Award winner and class Valedictorian, the families and friends in the audience are treated to an inspirational address offered by a notable artist or designer, a celebrated faculty member or a distinguished alum.

This term’s commencement speaker is artist, strategist and entrepreneur Bruce Heavin (BFA 93) and a dedicated member of the ArtCenter Board of Trustees.

As the chief creative officer and co-founder of lynda.com, his vision was integral to the company's success as a pioneering leader in online training. He created the company's iconic logo of his wife Lynda Weinman, designed many of the distinctive illustrations on the website and course DVD covers, and authored some of the site's first video tutorials in Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and ImageReady. An illustrator with extensive background in photography and motion graphics, he has created works for national publications as well as clients including Adobe, MSNBC and E! Entertainment Television. As a distinguished and committed alumnus, he was honored in 2021 with an Outstanding Service Award at the 15th Annual Alumni Awards. He has served as a founding board member of FullCircle, the College’s giving society, and was elected to the ArtCenter Board of Trustees in June 2014. Heavin and his wife Lynda Weinman have been transformational donors at ArtCenter College of Design for nearly two decades.

Alejandro Sandoval, a graduating student in the Illustration department, will receive the Student Leadership Award (SLA). The SLA is presented each term and fulfills ArtCenter’s vision of educating artists and designers who are not only leaders within their professional fields, but leaders in their communities. Based on recommendations from faculty, staff and students, this award recognizes a student who has provided leadership through participation in ArtCenter’s campus life, community outreach, student organizations and department initiatives.

Fall 2022 class Valedictorian is Fine Art major Miles Washington, a multi-disciplinary artist from Southern Virginia.

Following the graduation ceremony on Saturday afternoon, Grad Show opens both virtually and in person, providing friends, family and people from across Greater Los Angeles with a chance to view the work of our newly minted grads at a leisurely pace. Graduating students have opportunities to connect with potential employers by way of a virtual career fair platform and in person Grad Show events. Nike, Google and DreamWorks are among the many companies getting in line to meet emerging talent using a virtual recruitment process.
