ArtCenter College of Design Awarded School of the Year in Prestigious Global Advertising, Design and Digital Marketing Competition

ArtCenter College of Design was named “School of the Year” in The 2022 Young Ones competition, considered one of the most acclaimed advertising, interactive and design student competitions in the world. ArtCenter Graphic Design and Creative Direction students won the most awards with the highest scoring points in all four award categories in The Young Ones Student Awards presented each year by The One Club at a ceremony last month (May 2022) in New York. The combined total of 297 award points resulted in the “School of the Year” title based on 37 entries from ArtCenter. There was a total of more than 3,000 entries from 116 colleges and universities in 26 countries submitting work to be judged.

“Our mission is to give our students the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed in an incredibly competitive environment when they graduate,” said Gary Goldsmith, chair, ArtCenter’s Creative Direction department. “Winning in the Young Ones is both a testament to their readiness and an invaluable piece of recognition for them as future creative leaders, we couldn’t be more proud of them.”

“On the first day of school, we tell students to take risks and be willing to fail,” said Sean Adams, chair, ArtCenter Undergraduate and Graduate Graphic Design departments. “The work that led to The One Club’s recognition of ArtCenter as ‘School of the Year’ is the result of their magnificent courage to reinvent, question and explore the expected. In other words, to possibly fail. This award is the reaffirmation of our industry’s commitment to navigate new waters and encourage the next generation of creators.”

The Young Ones Student Awards combines four separate competition categories; the One Show Brief, Art Directors Club (ADC) awards, Portfolio and the Type Directors Club (TDC) awards.

The One Show Brief competition tasks a team of college students with creating client work with the chance to earn a One Show Pencil. For more than 40 years, the Gold Pencil award has been regarded as one of the top prizes in the creative industry. The One Show has had a rich legacy of honoring some of the most groundbreaking ideas, created by some of the most remarkable minds in creativity.

The Portfolio competition recognizes the best body of work created by an individual. Students are required to submit six to 15 pieces of their work to be judged by industry professionals. This global creative competition challenges students in creative studies to put their best foot forward in hopes of winning one of the first honors of their burgeoning careers.

The Art Directors Club (ADC) Annual Awards, celebrating 101 years of excellence in design and craft, is an iconic award show that honors the best creative talent and groundbreaking work across many different creative disciplines, from graphic design to illustration, from publishing to packaging, from advertising to photography and all points in between.

The Type Directors Club (TDC), now in its 68th year, is all about how letterforms are used, recognizing typographic excellence and innovation along with the art and craft of typography and design. The TDC awards focuses on how letterforms are drawn and celebrates new typeface designs in all global languages.

Award-winning projects by ArtCenter students will be on display in New York at Cooper Union starting July 13 for an exhibition of the TDC68 Communication Design, 25TDC Typeface Design and Young Ones TDC winners. This longstanding TDC tradition puts some of the most brilliantly designed use of type of the past year on display and invites all lovers of letterforms to visit the space. An opening reception will take place Wednesday, July 13, 2022, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Cooper Union, New York, NY. Tickets are required.

About The One Club for Creativity and Young Ones Student Awards
For more than 30 years, The One Club for Creativity has been and continues to be passionate about encouraging students and young professionals to showcase their creativity. Through the acclaimed Young Ones Student Awards, we aim to identify the best young creative talent from around the world in a variety of creative disciplines. The Young Ones Brief competition tasks students with creating work for different types of clients for the chance to earn a One Show Pencil. The Young Ones ADC competition offers students the chance to earn an ADC Cube by competing in the same disciplines and categories as the ADC Annual Awards. The Young Ones Portfolio competition is an opportunity for students to showcase examples from their portfolio in a variety of creative disciplines.

To qualify for entry, national and international college students must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate college program, or other program approved by The One Club's Education Department. Submissions to the competitions are judged based on creativity and originality. Winners are awarded during the Young Ones Education Festival, held each May in New York City.
