Graduate Font Design 1

3.00000

From this class you will gain a working knowledgeýof how letterforms are created and collected toýcreate a font. We will focusýprimarily on the construction of individualýletters. To understand this process, we will beginýwith looking at the act of handwriting.ýHowever, this is not a calligraphy class, we areýmerely utilizing some of the same tools. Theýmethod of handwriting to constructýletterforms dates back many centuries and yet itýis still utilized in contemporary font design.ýThis method will help you understandýthe intrinsic nature of each letterform that youýwill, in turn, be able to expand on and create anýoriginal typeface. Our process overýthe term will include pen and paper exercises thatýwill be translated into digital form via the fontýcreation software, Glyphs.ýEventually, you will venture into your ownýpersonal font, and by term's end, you will haveýcompleted a full-functioning font that will beýapplied to a specimen poster as well as itsýprocess documented via a binder. The goal of theýclass is to foster an appreciation ofýletterform creation while you develop a keenýsensitivity to typographic details.ýGraduate-level students are expected to provideýmore comprehensive research than undergrads and aýwritten 500 word statementýrelated to the project.ýPrerequisite:ý. For 3Year students = GMGX-551 Grad Studio 2ý. For 2Year students = GMGX-601 Grad Studio 3

Graduate Font Design 2

3.00000

Having completed Font Design 1, students willýleverage the technical advantages of working withýGlyphs to better understand and put into practiceýwhat is needed to develop font(s) for retailýmarketability. Students will have the option ofýapproaching the class in two manners - and in someýcases, may overlap the scope of both. 1.ýTraditional approach - develop further initiatedýfont from Font Design 1.ý- Build out in to a 'family' of multi-weights andýstyles - Within each font, complete the necessaryýcharacters that are expected from a font that isýsuitable for retail/professional use. Thisýincludes: diacritics, numeral sets and symbolsýOutcome - Documentation of process / Finalýpresentation - Font developed to the extentýthat it can be proposed to a foundry - Font stillýneeding more time - but far enough along for BETAý2. Conceptual approach - Create contextual /ýresponsive font(s) - Utilize OTF feature scriptingýor other tech platforms - Narrow the task requiredýof the font to (a) specific effect(s) - Build outýnecessary character sets to support desired effectý- Employ feature scripting for seamless userýexperience Outcome - Documentation of process /ýFinal presentation - Font that is responsive toýthe content it is set in - Font could beýconsidered for retail development. Graduate-levelýstudents are expected to provide moreýcomprehensive research than undergrads and aýwritten 500 word statement related to theirýproject(s).
