Students at work in the Printmaking Studio

Printmaking Studio

The Printmaking Studio is a state-of-the-art 3,000-square-foot facility designed to support both traditional and contemporary printmaking practices. The studio enables students to work hands-on with intaglio processes, including hard- and soft-ground etching, drypoint and aquatint, as well as screen printing, stone and plate lithography, woodblock and engraving techniques, and alternative photographic processes such as cyanotype, platinum-palladium, and salt prints.

The facility includes a fully equipped press room, etching room, darkroom, dedicated storage, and office space, providing the tools and environment necessary to refine technique, experiment, and produce original work. Students enrolled in printmaking courses receive guided studio instruction alongside structured critiques and independent studio time, fostering both technical mastery and conceptual development.

The Printmaking Studio was established in 1986 by Master Printer Anthony Zepeda, who worked at Gemini G.E.L. printing with artists like Rob Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, David Hockney, and Vija Celmins. Zepeda inspired and influenced the work of thousands of students who went on to become artists recognized as leaders in their fields.

Access

Access to the Printmaking Studio is structured through coursework and academic programming within the College. Courses taught in the space integrate material practice, technical discipline, and contemporary visual inquiry. Introductory and advanced printmaking courses provide hands-on experience across multiple processes and are open to students from all majors across the College, encouraging interdisciplinary participation and collaboration.
