For Steve Roden (1964–2023), painting was the center of gravity in a wide-ranging artistic practice that included sound, sculpture, and performance.
Steve Roden was a visual and sound artist who is known for being a pioneer of "lowercase" music. While his multidisciplinary approach included drawing, sculpture, film/video, sound installation, text, and performance, Steve was a painter. He often said painting was his sun and all the other media hovered around it. His work fused delicate, nuanced observation with intuition and improvisation. Since graduating with an MFA from ArtCenter in 1989, Steve has exhibited and performed internationally and his music and art continues to find new audiences. Steve enjoyed working with graduate art students and would always make time for studio visits.
The Steve Roden Endowed Scholarship will support aspiring fine artists in the Graduate Art program with a preference for those whose work involves painting. This financial support will assist students with their journey of self-discovery and self-expression. The scholarship was established by the Roden Family.
t took me a long time to get here, but I believe we arrive at the perfect moment meant just for us. Attending an MFA program as demanding as ArtCenter’s would have been an incredible strain without the generosity of scholarship donors. Your support allowed me to fully embrace this journey and grow into the artist I have always dreamed of becoming.
