Change Lab Podcast Episode 1: Lynda Weinman on Taking Arts Education Online

In the debut episode of ArtCenter’s Change Lab podcast, President Lorne Buchman interviews Lynda Weinman, who partnered with her husband, ArtCenter alum Bruce Heavin, to found Lynda.com in 1995. What began as a means to provide wider access to popular digital arts courses she began teaching at ArtCenter, Lynda.com ultimately became gold standard for online learning. Often dubbed the mother of the internet, Weinman parlayed her successful career writing popular how-to books about various topics in web design to laying the foundation for the future of online learning.

If you let your own heart and mind guide you toward what interests you, you will find your purpose and passion.

In just 20 years, Lynda.com was truly the first of its kind, assembling a suite of high quality educational videos, accessed via subscription long before The New York Times and most other publishers started charging for content. In twenty short years, the company became unparalled in the size and quality of its online library, and in 2015 LinkedIn purchased Lynda.com for a staggering $1.5 billion.

In her Change Lab interview, Lynda discusses her creative trajectory—how her tough childhood and early dislike of school became the impetus for her career in teaching and for her compelling perspective on the value and nature of a good education. She also opens up about life after selling her business, the role of failure in her success and cultivating her own “beginner’s mind.”
