Student Event: Pandemic Response Design Challenge

Saturday, May 23, 2020
through
Saturday, May 30, 2020

ArtCenter’s Hackathon Club has organized a 1-week remote design challenge in collaboration with Designmatters,  Entrepreneurship and Professional Practice, Caltech and UCLA. The event will give participants the opportunity to experiment with design solutions addressing the following three timely topics: remote collaboration, health, and education. The focus of this design challenge is not limited to the current COVID-19 crisis. Our goal is to develop ideas that also apply to future global catastrophes.

Participants will be organized into teams focusing on one of the above topics. Teams will receive guidance from experts and will be encouraged to collaborate across majors to ensure the work produced benefits from students’ diverse areas of expertise and backgrounds. A critical component of this design challenge will be the research phase when teams will receive support provided by a panel of experts.

The goal is for the winning teams to continue their projects over the course of future terms at ArtCenter in alignment with degree audits. These groups will have the opportunity to connect with students in engineering and medical programs at Caltech and UCLA, along with mentors from the healthcare, education, and technology sectors. Successful teams will be encouraged to apply for business plan competitions, project funding from VentureWell, and other pre-seed investors.
