From spaces of uncertainty to creative discovery

$29.95 hardcover | ISBN: 9780500024522

An eye-opening exploration of creativity that upends notions of innate artistic and visionary genius, probing instead discoveries that result from the art of making

Upending popular notions of innate artistic and visionary genius and, instead, probing the event of discovery that happens through the act of making, Make to Know: From spaces of uncertainty to creative discovery explores the revelatory nature of the creative journey itself. In contrast to the classic tale of Michelangelo, who “saw the angel in the stone,” the artists, entrepreneurs, innovators and designers featured in this book—from Chris Kraus and Frank Gehry to Zack Snyder, Aimee Bender, and Diana Thater, among many others—talk about knowing their work as they engage in the doing.

“The majority of makers I have interviewed for this book do not see their work as the product of predetermined vision,” writes author and international leader in art and design education Lorne M. Buchman in Make to Know. “Instead, they recognize that what they produce evolves from the process of making itself… These are artists and designers who talk about how they make to know. This is a book of stories of writers filling blank sheets of paper, designers solving complex problems, installation artists engaging space and materials, and musicians and actors improvising composition and performance. It explores how artists talk about what the creative process itself might reveal.”

As Buchman weaves together their vivid stories, he presents a way of thinking that democratizes creativity and uncovers a process that leads to knowing both one’s work and oneself. Drawing on conversations with some of the most creative people on the planet, Make to Know is a book full of insights that will change the way readers think about innovation and self-expression.
