COVID-19: Update 23 [On-Campus Access Protocols]

Under the state and local “Safer at Home” order, educational institutions are categorized as essential businesses for the purposes of facilitating distance learning and performing critical functions. With this definition, the College has created access protocols for individuals who need to come on campus. These access protocols—along with continued adherence to general health and wellness practices—are intended to keep our entire community safe and healthy.

Requesting campus access

  • In an effort to reduce the risk of exposure to critical employees, we are working with individual departments to create a “service bureau” model, wherein materials can be picked up and dropped off safely. Please discuss your on-campus needs with individual departments or supervisors before requesting access.
  • Campus Security has sole authority to allow or prohibit access to campus.
  • You must first complete the access request form which provides all of the relevant information for screening. ArtCenter – Campus Access Request Form
  • The form is to be completed three days in advance of your request date.

In preparation for your campus visit

  • Ensure you are following “Safer at Home” orders by staying inside your residence and limiting outside movement to essential needs only.
  • f you are sick or feeling ill (fever, coughing, sneezing, body aches, etc.) stay home! Do not report to campus. Send an email to Campus Security, your faculty or supervisor to reschedule your visit. Call your medical provider, follow their instructions, and self-quarantine for 14 days. Once you have been cleared by your medical provider, you can contact Campus Security to reschedule your visit.
  • Identify all the tasks you need to complete prior to arriving on campus. Make a specific list of the tasks and time needed to complete each task so you can complete them efficiently.
  • Your ArtCenter ID is required at the time of arrival
  • You will be required to wear your own face covering
  • You will be restricted to the specific areas you have requested access to. You will not be allowed free or full access to the entire campus.

While on campus

  • See something. Say something. – If you see or notice any individual showing symptoms of illness, report it to Campus Security immediately. Do not approach the individual.
  • Physical distancing – Everyone on campus is required to maintain a minimum six-foot physical distance from other individuals at all times.
  • Face coverings – Individuals must wear their own face coverings in public settings. More information is below.
  • Disinfect surfaces – Take time to wipe down tables, tools, pens, equipment, workstations, etc. before utilizing them with a Clorox wipe or with a clean cloth and disinfecting cleanser. This should be repeated throughout the time you are on campus. Do not reuse soiled rags. Clorox wipe dispensers are located in select areas for your convenience.
  • Hand hygiene – Everyone is to maintain the strictest hand hygiene protocol by washing their hands frequently throughout the day. Wash your hands, under your nails, forearms and elbows for 20 seconds with soap and water before you arrive to campus and frequently throughout your time on campus. Avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. We cannot emphasize enough how critically important hand hygiene is to ensure your health and safety, and the safety of everyone around you.
  • Stay tobacco- and smoke free – ArtCenter campuses are tobacco- and smoke-free. This includes use of all smoke, vape, tobacco, electronic nicotine delivery and smoke-less products and devices. If you smoke or vape, consider quitting. Smokers who already have lung disease or reduced lung capacity could be at increased risk of serious illness.
  • Breaks – If your work will last longer than two hours, we encourage you to take hourly breaks. Meal periods and rest breaks are to be on a staggered schedule in any shared area. No more than two individuals are to be in any shared space at the same time, while maintaining the required six-foot physical distance. Do not share food, snacks, fruit, utensils, beverages, etc.

Face coverings
In recent weeks, public health and government agencies including the CDC and the City of Los Angeles now require individuals to wear face coverings when conducting activities outside the home. Therefore, ArtCenter will require individuals to wear face coverings when they are on campus. While medical-grade masks (such as N95 masks) should be reserved for medical providers, individuals can make their own protective face covering using a scarf, bandana or other cloth items, to help reduce community spread of the virus. More information about DIY face coverings is available from the CDC. Please note, however, social distancing and handwashing remain the primary recommendations to avoid contracting COVID-19, and face coverings alone do not provide sufficient protection.

Stay informed
It is important for Individuals to stay actively involved in their own education regarding the pandemic as the situation changes daily. General information about the local COVID-19 outbreak can be obtained from the Pasadena Public Health Department and the City of Los Angeles Emergency Management Department. Please also continue to monitor your ArtCenter email for ongoing updates from the College.
