Alumni Awards Honor Emerging and Leading Figures at the Intersection of Art and Design

Doug Aitken, Sterling Ruby, Gloria Kondrup and Ini Archibong to be Honored at the Alumni Awards Dinner on November 16, 2019

ArtCenter College of Design is pleased to announce the 13th Annual Alumni Awards Dinner, taking place November 16, 2019 at Otium. The Alumni Awards are an opportunity for ArtCenter to recognize and celebrate the service and influence of individuals who work in disciplines spanning from fine art and industrial design to advertising and filmmaking.

The 2019 Alumni Awards will honor Doug Aitken (BFA 91) with the Lifetime Achievement Award, Sterling Ruby (MFA 15) with the newly-established Distinguished Midcareer Award, Gloria Kondrup (MFA 93) with the Outstanding Service Award, and Ini Archibong (BS 12) with the Young Innovator Award.

“Doug, Sterling, Gloria and Ini are, collectively, a vivid representation of the extraordinary breadth and depth of art and design created by our alumni,” said Lorne M. Buchman, president, ArtCenter College of Design. “They are all significant figures in shaping culture, and they inspire future generations of ArtCenter students to influence change.”

Together, these four individuals offer insight into the cross-disciplinary nature of ArtCenter’s approach to learning. Doug Aitken is highly regarded as an artist and filmmaker whose work defies definitions of genre, extending into the fields of installations, architectural interventions and time-based media. Sterling Ruby works in a range of aesthetic and material approaches, from sculptures to drawings, spray-paint and oil paintings, photography and video, as well as textile works that include quilts, tapestries, garments and soft sculptures. ArtCenter Professor Gloria Kondrup, executive director of the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography, is a dedicated teacher of design and typography for more than two decades who has worked with an array of international companies on graphic design and branding strategy. Ini Archibong has a deep interest in master-craftsmanship and its intrinsic relationship to technology both modern and ancient which informs his work for diverse clients across the globe including such venerable brands as Hermès, de Sede, Bernhardt Design, Ruinart, Christofle and Vacheron Constantin.
