Orlando Sanabria

Graphic Design

7th Term

What has been your favorite Art Center experience?
Meeting talented classmates whom I respect and value.

In what ways has Art Center helped you grow as a designer?
I have learned so much from Art Center's many experienced instructors. The projects I've worked on have challenged me, and helped me to develop my skills as a designer. The high level of networking with working professionals has exposed me to the different fields within graphic design. And critiques with instructors have shown me how to fully utilize my creativity.

Has your view of the role of art and design changed since coming to Art Center?
Definitely. I see design as not just a problem-solving process, but a business as well.

What has been your favorite class or project while at Art Center?
I have several favorites, but if I have to pick just one it would have to be Advanced Graphic Design with Petrula Vrontikis. She asked us to come up with a solution for a problem facing the City of Los Angeles. I chose to compare my neighborhood with a more affluent one located beside mine, and found that lower-income communities are filled with what I call “negative businesses,” such as liquor stores and fast food restaurants. For instance, in my neighborhood you'll find 10 liquor stores within a mile and a half radius, while the higher income neighborhood next door has no liquor stores in that radius but instead two gyms, healthy restaurants and meeting places for residents. As part of my research, I attended my neighborhood council meeting and was inspired by the passion they have to improve my neighborhood. Today, I am a member of my neighborhood council, working to create new ways to help improve communication between the city council and my neighbors.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned so far at Art Center?
That presenting ideas and concepts is as important as the final results.

Where do you find inspiration?
In my surroundings, my life experiences, my culture, my family and most importantly, in those who work to make changes for a better world.

Sanabria graduated from Art Center in 2009.
