Kayla Varley

Photography and Imaging

1st Term

We met Photography and Imaging student Kayla Varley through Facebook-she was our 500th fan! Kayla is in her first term at Art Center. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with friends, watching movies and, not surprisingly, taking photographs.

Why did you choose to attend Art Center?
I felt a special energy here from the minute I stepped on campus. I knew that I would be able succeed here.

What has surprised you the most during your time here?
How small and close-knit the community is here. Every day I see the same faces in hallways and classrooms. It's refreshing.

Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in everyday life: light and how it changes throughout the day, the curves and contours of the human body, the people I surround myself with.

What do you hope to accomplish through your work?
To make an impact on people-be it good or bad. I want my images to shock, surprise and bring laughter.

Tell us something about your work that people might find surprising.
I am my own worst critic. There are days that I want to give up taking photos altogether, but I have to remind myself that I am capable, and I will succeed.

What is the most challenging aspect of studying art and design?
Studying art is so subjective. You can pour your heart and soul into your work, but not everyone is going to appreciate it. At Art Center it can be especially challenging because the workload is so rigorous. It becomes your entire life.

When you are not in school or studying, what do you like to do?
I like to spend time with my friends, watch movies and take photographs.
