Title: Associate Director, Student Leadership and Activities

Department - Center for the Student Experience

Type - Full-time staff


In consultation with the Dean of Students, the Associate Director supports the College’s educational mission as a vital member of the Student Affairs staff in the Center for the Student Experience. The Associate Director coordinates student programs focusing on the social and leadership development of students, encourages co-curricular engagement, creates community-building opportunities, and assists students in building vital connections with other students, faculty, and staff.  The Associate Director, Student Leadership and Activities oversees important transition and orientation programs for new students; plans all-campus activities and workshops; and advises student leaders of clubs and organizations, the Student Programming Board, Art Center Student Government, and the peer mentor program guiding them in their leadership development through training, daily responsibilities, and teachable moments.


  • Develop and coordinate events, programs and services tailored to the on-going needs of students-at-large, student government, and clubs and organizations—events, programs and services will be tailored to first-year success, building campus community, fostering institutional pride, assisting in the development of character and leadership, contributing to the health and wellness of students, and the overall educational success of students
  • Coordinate peer mentors selection and training
  • Assist with developing, advising and implementing programs for campus student organizations
  • Oversee the management, training and promotion of student clubs and organizations
  • Co-advise Art Center Student Government along with the Dean of Students including attending weekly executive meetings and full council meetings
  • Advise and train the Student Programming Board
  • Coordinate student leadership programs including student government retreats, and club/organization workshops, and elections
  • Provide management oversight for social media sites for the Center for the Student Experience including the Uversity Facebook application
  • Work with CSE staff to develop policies, strategies and other initiatives that respond to the changing needs of students and student groups
  • Assess the student experience as it relates to student involvement and leadership opportunities in clubs/organizations and campus-wide events; provide qualitative/quantitative data of these programs and services to management
  • Monitor risk management exposure for Art Center College of Design by closely managing the activities of student clubs and organizations
  • Manage and track budget expenditures for all areas of Student Activities and Leadership to ensure that expenses are monitored for appropriateness and within approved allocation
  • Collaborate with academic departments and others on programs that enhance the student experience and promote opportunities for learning
  • Maintain active participation and engagement in Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) and relevant student affairs professional associations
  • Serve on Student Affairs and College-wide committees as assigned by the Dean of Students
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students


  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field, Master’s in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or Counseling preferred
  • Background in Art and/or Design fields, or previous experience in an Art and Design educational environment desirable
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in a leadership role within college student activities and/or leadership development
  • Strong leader with proven organizational abilities to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative team setting
  • Must be committed to understanding the developmental needs of a diverse population of students with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with them
  • Experience working with a diverse mix of student organizations having a broad-range of purposes
  • Ability to develop working relationships with faculty and staff for the purpose of advocating for student involvement in campus committees and events, and leadership development opportunities in and outside of the college’s formal curriculum
  • Principles of management and supervision and conflict management/problem solving techniques
  • Experience in assessment and evaluation of programs, services, and/or staff
  • Familiarity with college/university best practices in risk management of student club and organization activity
  • Strong analytical and human relations skills needed to negotiate solutions to complex student issues and concerns
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when necessary
