Title: Executive Director, Undergraduate Transportation Design

Description

Working with the Chair of the department, the Director of Transportation Design is responsible for administering and assisting in implementing the strategic plan for the department (including recruitment, curriculum, marketing, fundraising and external relations), and taking a lead role in executing that strategy.† This entails working closely with the department's 40+ faculty and 250+ students, as well as leadership of Art Center's other departments. This position directs day-to-day function of the department by interfacing with faculty, students, other departments, and industry. Additionally, assist in overseeing the curriculum and discuss potentials and gaps in the current curriculum with the Chair. Work closely with Chair on building curricular strategies including new educational initiatives, technology and facilities (layouts), conferences, faculty enrichment workshops. Schedule all undergraduate Tran courses and manage the departmentís faculty body, including adjunct and full-time faculty members. General oversight of student workers. General management of undergraduate department budget in conjunction with Department Chair; provide administrative support to the Chair and Department. In addition to working closely with the Chair, this position will regularly collaborate with the Sr. Coordinator, Transportation, and Executive Director, of graduate transportation design. †

While the primary focus is educational quality, this position works closely with the Development staff on fundraising opportunities; the Admissions staff on recruitment opportunities; and the Marketing and Communications staff on marketing, public relations and press opportunities.

Essential Functions

  • General departmental oversight, overseeing the undergraduate department budget, strategic planning, logistics, events, administrative support to implement operations
  • Work with Chair to establish goals and priorities for the department and then working to achieve those goals
  • Facilitate 40 faculty and 40 classes, acting on behalf of Department Chair during Chairís absences
  • Respond to student and faculty issues, facilitating program
  • Work with Technical Skills department to anticipate/ensure an adequate supply of materials and resources for each term
  • Identify fabricators/modelers to support department
  • Keep apprised of technology developments and work to bring improved resources to the College
  • Assist with advising and scheduling students
  • Help coordinate sponsored projects and identify and cultivate future projects; work with Development staff to strategize and execute fundraising opportunities
  • Work with Admissions and Marketing/Communications to strategize and execute recruitment and marketing opportunities
  • Annually, contribute to the Art Center Car Classic event and the Transportation Design department's participation in various automotive events, such as Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and Los Angeles Auto Show

Qualifications

  • Bachelorís degree with 7Ė10 years (preferably international) experience in design, project planning, marketing, and good network in design community
  • Experience as a designer in the transportation or related industry required
  • Passion for higher education is necessary to success
  • Budget management, staff management, and event management experience preferred
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with leadership from other departments, industry, corporate sponsors, alumni, donors and the press
  • Prior supervisory experience necessary††
