Art Center’s Strategic Plan, Create Change, calls for a commitment to transforming art and design education and sets out to build the capacity to achieve its ambitious goals. As a new position, the Director of Faculty Development will provide leadership for the Center for Teaching and Learning. S/he will be responsible for building effective working relationships with full-time and part-time faculty, Department Chairs, Student Affairs staff, and other campus partners in enhancing the faculty experience and teaching best practices central to educational excellence and institutional viability. The programs, training, and other professional development opportunities managed by the director will advance Art Center faculty members as exceptional teachers, scholars, and primary contributors to student learning. This position reports to the Provost.
Essential Functions
- Work closely with the faculty, the Provost, and the Department Chairs to develop a community of faculty and to provide oversight of faculty development and best teaching practices, including a special emphasis on updating faculty with contemporary pedagogy, technology, and emerging teaching methods such as online and other eLearning initiatives
- Evaluate the teaching and professional needs of faculty, and implement programs, services, and other resources to meet those needs. Plan and carryout a comprehensive orientation program for new faculty members in cooperation with Human Resources
- Work closely with the faculty and the Faculty Council; maintain open communication between the faculty and the Department Chairs offices
- Assist faculty in developing a capacity for research and other funding opportunities for practitioner and/or creators and/or research scholarship and faculty enrichment
- Work with the Faculty Council on internal grant and stipend processes
- Work with the Office of Student Affairs, other administrators and faculty to address student learning issues and concerns and to develop advisement practices and appropriate early intervention practices for students who are in crisis, underprepared, underperforming, have behavioral concerns, have specialized learning needs or are otherwise at-risk
- Provide workshops and resources to faculty on topics of relevance for classroom management and student support such as Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Art Center Student Code of Conduct
- In partnership with the Center for Educational Effectiveness and other relevant offices, assist in the development and implementation of student and faculty-related academic policies, procedures and systems
- Work closely with Marketing and Communications to assist in promoting faculty accomplishments
