Title: Chair, Undergraduate Fine Art

Art Center College of Design is seeking a dynamic Chair for the Undergraduate Fine Art Department. The applicant must have a broad knowledge of contemporary art and art education practices. She/he will be committed to further developing a well-established program, building upon its forward thinking curriculum, generating new critical learning opportunities for students and fostering strong connections to larger social and cultural communities - locally, nationally and internationally.    

The Art Center Undergrad FA department consists of a core program focused on practices in Sculpture, Painting, Video and Expanded Practices, with minors in Photography and Illustration. It is a key department in the creation of school-wide Transdisciplinary studios and is currently launching a new cross-departmental concentration focusing on socially engaged art practices.  

The successful candidate will have a strong record of accomplishment in teaching and professional practice. Experience in the development and implementation of curriculum, especially in relation to the ever-changing landscape of art and cultural production will also be required. S/he must be an enlightened and inspiring leader who works collaboratively with faculty and understands the needs of a culturally diverse student body. The candidate should also have solid experience as an administrator with the capacity and intent to work effectively with staff and other department Chairs. S/he should have the ability to listen and manage expectations, exhibit fairness and insight in decision-making, provide key leadership for new student recruitment and participate in departmental and institutional fundraising activities.  

The Fine Art department consists of five full-time and a pool of 15 adjunct faculty members (some of whom teach in other disciplines), and approximately 70-85 students in any given semester. Faculty members are exhibiting artists with international careers. The department chair has the responsibility for budget, hiring and assignment of new courses to faculty. The chair also participates in the shared governance of the college through the Chairs Council and other service committees.  


Please provide examples of your experience in these areas:

  • Professional and academic experience in contemporary art;
  • A record of research, publications and/or practice in a relevant discipline;
  • At least five years as a practicing administrator/educator with an advanced degree;
  • Knowledge of general higher education and assessment best practices;
  • Experience in various outreach functions, with attention to the development of strong relationships with other academic, art and design institutions;
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain good working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff and students;
  • Strong verbal, written/visual presentation and communication skills.
