Title: Chair, Humanities & Sciences

The Humanities & Sciences Department is seeking a Chair with a broad knowledge of Design and Visual Arts histories and practices. The ideal candidate should have a deep commitment to undergraduate student-centered education that supports, informs, and enriches students’ intellectual development, and their critical thinking and communication skills in partnership with their studio practice. S/he should understand our culturally diverse student and faculty body, their needs and goals, and our rapidly changing professional world.

The successful candidate should have a record of accomplishment in teaching and professional practice. S/he should be able to demonstrate success as a highly skilled and deeply knowledgeable administrator with both the capacity and expressed desire to work collaboratively with an involved, experienced and diverse faculty, and within the current departmental and institutional governance structures. S/he must be an excellent communicator and a good listener with an open mind, have respect for faculty and students, practice fairness and ethical principles in decision-making, and have the ability to provide effective leadership in working with Chairs of other departments to achieve departmental and institutional goals. The candidate should have a relevant and informed perspective of the role of the humanities and sciences in contemporary art and design education.


  • Professional and academic experience in the fields of art and design;
  • A record of research, publications and/or practice in a relevant discipline;
  • At least five years as a practicing administrator/educator with an advanced degree preferably in an institution of higher learning;
  • Knowledge of general higher education and assessment best practices;
  • The ability to craft a curriculum that integrates with Art Center’s BFA and BS programs;
  • Experience in various outreach functions, with attention to the development of strong relationships with other academic, art and design institutions;
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain good working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff and students;
  • Strong verbal, written and visual presentation and communication skills.

Art Center College of Design (www.artcenter.edu) offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide variety of art and design disciplines: BFA degrees in Advertising Design, Film, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography & Imaging; and BS degrees in Entertainment Design, Environmental Design, Interaction Design, Product Design and Transportation Design; as well as Public Programs offering design education to students of all ages and levels of experience. Integral to Art Center’s core curricula is a commitment to providing its students with the skills to embrace change and address real-world issues.

The Humanities & Sciences department consists of 10 full time faculty (many of whom teach in other disciplines) and approximately 60 adjunct faculty members. A department governance structure consisting of a rotating group of Faculty Directors representing the areas of Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences and Technologies, Professional and Research Practices, Business Practices, and Writing (including ESL), along with the Director of the department, help to craft curriculum and determine department initiatives. The chair has the sole responsibility for budget, hiring and assignment of new courses to faculty. The chair also participates in the shared governance of the college through the Chairs Council and other committees s/he may be asked to sit on.

Pasadena is located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, within 20 minutes of downtown Los Angeles. The city is home to many cultural and educational institutions including the Norton Simon Museum, the Huntington Library, and the California Institute of Technology, which manages the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Cultural innovation in the arts is also part of LA’s heritage, with major cultural resources like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
