Cracks or weak spots in the Earth’s crust allow magma to form volcanoes. Yellowstone National Park is the site of a supervolcano, a volcanic center that has had an eruption of magnitude 8 on the Volcano Explosivity Index. Three supereruptions have occurred there, 2.1 million, 1.3 million, and 640,000 years ago. 1993.
