Design the total spatial experience—from the first encounter to the last moment of interaction.

Environmental design is a discipline that encompasses many areas of interest and expertise. Because Environmental Design is a multifaceted program, graduates will be prepared to apply their skills in a wide variety of design professions, innovative businesses and artistic pursuits.

Students in our Undergraduate Environmental Design program create spatial experiences and learn how to design human-centered projects that include furniture, lighting and other interior components, with a focus on the responsible use of materials and building and manufacturing practices. Students master a wide range of spatial projects in many scales, from brand-driven retail design and theme-based restaurants to hotel lobbies and exhibition spaces.

Students in our Graduate Environmental Design program focus on the parameters of sensory-based design, taking themselves beyond the confines of style to consider the links between the psychological, physical, emotional and sensory effects of design. Degree candidates are asked to choose between our two tracks:

  • Spatial Experience Design - Make spaces that communicate. Create design for hospitality, retail, office, exhibition and event spaces through investigation of branding, functionality and user experience. Guided by a conceptual and practical exploration of materials, space and emotion, the Spatial Experience track promotes technical innovation and conceptual rigor within the context of professional practice.
  • Furniture and Fixtures Design - Designing resonant furniture and fixtures requires a deep investigation of the relationship between space, place, function and communication. Through consideration of the psychological, physical and emotional role of furniture within spaces, environmental designers create objects that convey brands, concepts and emotions.
