SoCal Futures and the Supersonic show
SoCCAS aims to promote exchange and engagement between faculty and students of the art schools of Southern California, leading SoCal institutions and the wider community in the form of outstanding lectures by local, national and international artists and cultural critics; panels and discussion; and an annual themed symposium, which will be published in book form.
The consortium will also assist in exchanges between students and sponsor student-run events, including presentations and discussions of current work at a central venue.
SoCCAS offers an exciting way to headline the extraordinary concentration of outstanding art schools in Southern California and underline the identification of this region as a world leader in art practice, criticism and pedagogy.
SoCCAS events are generously supported by the eight founding art schools; and the inaugural symposium is co-hosted by MoCA Please note: Supersonic, the mega-graduation show of 120 young artists from the eight SoCal art schools will open the day before the symposium, on Saturday, June 12 (see Supersonic website for more details). The first SoCCAS committee is: Michael Brewster (Claremont); David Bunn (USC); Sam Durant (California Institute of the Arts); Annetta Kapon (Otis); Mike Kelley (Art Center, Pasadena); John Welchman (UCSD), founder & chair; James Welling (UCLA); Bruce Yonemoto (UCI)
