The sculpture I am presenting in this exhibition is simply
a hand crafted wedge-shaped speaker box that faces downward
and is covered in 23k gold leaf.
The form of the sculpture is inspired by the functional wedge-shaped
design of many speakers. When imagining a wedge-shaped speaker
facing downward, it reminded me roughly of the shape of an
oversized bar of gold bullion. As this piece came together
I began to recognize the influence of several different aesthetics,
including: Pop, Minimalism, Hip Hop, and Baroque. The underside
of the sculpture is fitted with two 10 300w sub-bass drivers.
The potential audio programming is infinite. For this exhibition
a custom audio soundtrack will be produced. The volume, and
frequency of the sound output will be negotiated in relationship
to the other pieces in the exhibition. I would like to acknowledge
artists Dewey Ambrosino, Matt Hope, Barbra Kruger, Rubén
Ortiz-Torres, and Tristan Shone variously for inspiration,
assistance, guidance, and support with this project.
