ABOUT SUPERSONIC
Following the success of the past two student-organized Supersonic
exhibitions of Southern California M.F.A. work in 2004
and 2005,
nine graduate fine arts programs are joining together again
to present the Supersonic show. This year’s Supersonic
will be hosted by the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in
Barnsdall Park, site of the historic Hollyhock House in Hollywood,
designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Supersonic 2006 is entirely organized by students from the
nine participating Southern California M.F.A. programs and
presents works of intellectual and artistic rigor by 140 graduate
students in one location. This exhibition is a remarkable
opportunity for recent M.F.A. graduates to exhibit work collectively
and share in dialogue with the larger Southern California
community. The work presented in Supersonic represents a wide
range of cutting-edge artistic practices.
Additionally, critical writings from Ph.D., M.A., and M.F.A.
students from the nine graduate programs will be accessible
from the Supersonic 2006 website. These writings discuss the
artists' material practices in relation to Supersonic and
to larger art practices, creating a forum that further highlights
the depth of work assembled for this show.
The Municipal Art Gallery is operated and programmed by the
Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) and located in Barnsdall
Park. The Gallery is open Friday through Sunday from 12 noon
to 5 p.m. Hours are extended until 9 p.m. on First Fridays
(first Friday of each month). Gallery admission for Adults
is $5; Seniors and Students, $3; Children under 12 with Adults,
Free. Admission is Free to the opening receptions and during
First Fridays. For more information the public should call
