“Presently, this country spends more money in 10 minutes at the gas pump than it puts into a year of solar-energy research,” Nate Lewis has said. “But the sun provides more energy to the planet in an hour than all the fossil energy consumed worldwide in a year.”

This insight has led the Caltech George L. Argyros Professor of Chemistry to collaborate with a group of Caltech and MIT chemists on a research program looking for efficient, economical ways to store solar energy in the form of chemical bonds—in other words, producing energy cheaply and cleanly. A Caltech faculty member since 1988, Lewis’ research interests include artificial photosynthesis and electronic noses.
