Richard Koshalek was appointed the fourth president of Art Center College of Design in 1999. Under his leadership, the College has embarked on a landmark program to invigorate its educational goals, expand both its programs and its campuses, and to train designers to see themselves as a force for change in the world. He has served as director of The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and is a board member of the American Federation of Arts. In 1999, he was awarded the Chevalier de L’Orde des Arts et des Lettres from the French government.
