Gary Simmons
Wake, 2000

The non-web work work of artist Gary Simmons has appeared in exhibitions at many galleries and museums, including the Whitney Musuem of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Metro Pictures, New York, and Margo Leavin Gallery, Los Angeles.

A sense of nostalgia is summoned by Wake, as the viewer is invited to scan several different depictions of dance-floor spaces that fade in and out of view, and that can never be comprehended in their entirety without collecting one's memory. Elegant and gentle, Wake's images emerge from a mist, evoking felings of longing and desire - helped by audio segments such as Blue Moon, Cry me a River, Mr. Sandman, and Falling in Love Again.
