Ben Benjamin
Superbad, 1995 -
A freelance web-designer who lives in San Francisco and works for Internet start-ups, Ben Benjamin is currently occupied by a one-year project in Japan. Superbad has been featured I.D., Wired, Paper Magazine, and The New York Times online, as well as the 2000 Whitney Biennial.
Superbad is a rapid-fire manipulation of pop imagery, the vocabulary of graphic design, and the Web itself, bringing attention to the world of visual culture. Many images in the piece are snippets from Benjamin's own commercial design work - recycled after being rejected as too "weird" for the corporate world. As with Pop Art in the 1960s, the constantly changing image stream in Superbad engages with one's awareness of the world around, compressing and reformatting it as if to be seen for the very first time.
