Shiba Ward

Lauren KingOriginally from San Fernando, CA, Shiba Ward showed an early interest in drawing and visual art at age 5 and continued to pursue and cultivate these interests well into adulthood.

Ordinarily enough, Shiba Ward began his career as an engineer, and then budded into an artist of extraordinary talent. With a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from California State University, Northridge, he entered the workforce as a Computer-Aided Designer for a nearby company called Sylvan Design, an architectural lighting firm. Later, Mr. Ward became a Project Engineer at Northrop Grumman Corporation in Palmdale, CA then relocated to Honeywell International in Torrance, CA where he was a Systems Engineer for four years.

With a decade’s worth of technical experience, Mr. Ward left the aerospace industry in 2001 to pursue a long time interest in academic painting and drawing.  He applied to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Illustration–Honors in 2005.

Throughout his art education, Mr. Ward won scholarships three years in a row. His pieces were also selected to appear in various art publications, including one by the Los Angeles chapter of the esteemed Society of Illustrators. He currently resides in Seattle, WA with his wife and new baby. His work is represented by Sullivan Goss gallery in Santa Barbara, CA.

Current Work
Mr. Ward is inspired by urban settings that depict people in realistic and natural environments and situations. Using traditional painting techniques and solid fundamentals, he attempts to capture a sense of place and mood while creating a narrative that can be further elaborated by the viewer’s imagination.

"...Within the region of Brittany, we had the opportunity to spend time in Quimper, Concarneau and Pont-L'Abbe.  In each of these places our hosts were kind and generous, inviting us into their homes for food, drink and conversation and offering whatever assistance necessary to ensure a pleasant and productive stay.

The people were warm and good natured and the towns were full of character and history.   I found much inspiration in the adventures of short excursions to the countryside... sometimes driving from town to town: exploring, sketching, documenting.....other times spending an entire day meandering through the streets and alleyways of a particular town."
