AVIGNON

This beautiful small and ancient city of art and culture is most renowned for the Palace of the Popes—both a former residence of the Popes (in the 14th century) and fortress. A maze of galleries, chambers, chapels and passages, the palace the palace took 30 years to build. It is also home to the 13th-century Bénézet bridge/Le Pont d’Avignon and to several other remarkable monuments and notable museums.

AIX EN PROVENCE

Also a center of intellectual and artistic activity, this university town is only a 3-hour ride from Paris by TGV high-speed train. This is a city of magnificent avenues bordered by plane trees and line by 17th and 18th century mansions, beautiful squares with elegant fountains such as the Cours Mirabeau. Aix is also renowned as the birthplace of Paul Cézanne: his studio is opened to the public and the newly restored Musée Granet will host a major exhibition of his works early June 2006 to celebrate the centennial of the great artist’s death.

MARSEILLE

The great Mediterranean port is France’s oldest major city. Spanning 26 centuries it has considerably grown since the times of the Phocaeans founded the ancient city of Massalia—traces of which can be seen in the area of the old harbor. A few notable sites among many: the old harbor, the fortified church of St. Victor; the Vieille Charité Center with its Roman-Byzantine style Cathédrale de la Major and Museum of African, Oceanic and Amerindian Art; Le Corbusier’s “Cité Radieuse” and the off-shore Chateau d’If made famous by Alexandre Dumas’ “Man in the Iron Mask.”
