Maryanne Matson was born in Seattle to an opera singer mother and an avid cook and gardener father. She experimented with jewelry design and furniture making, but decided to pursue painting. Matson received her undergraduate degree from UCLA, and completed her MFA at Otis in 2004.
Her work is figurative, and focuses on the domestic genre and still life. Dogs, flowers, and food are common subjects. She bases her work on photographs, and exploits effects of abstraction and rendering. In these paintings, Matson combines darkness and frivolity with a sense of humor. She works in series to achieve an effect of multiple experiences and forces.

My trip to Provence was an exceptional opportunity and an extrordinary trip. As an artist, France has been a preeminant patron of the arts and the French are renown for their art of living. Provence is to me the epitome of French style: the perfect blend of town and country. Nothing beats being able to relax outside a café in the morning sun along a beautiful tree lined boulevard, planning the day’s outing to a museum, or some local Roman ruins or just trekking to the hillsides to take in the vistas that have inspired so many artists before me.
Whether it’s food, architecture, clothing or just how they lead their lives, the people of Provence do everything with a style that is uniquely their own.
