This important modern city which lies on the banks of the Ill River, is not only the capital of Alsace but also the capital of Europe since 1949. It is home to the majestic 14th to 15th century Notre Dame Cathedral, one of the finest and most original Gothic cathedrals, which features the very popular 19th-century Astronomical Clock. Strasbourg is also known for its old quarter, featuring “La Petite France,” the canal district which is lined by 15th to 17th-century Alsatian Renaissance houses.

EGUISHEIM

This ancient 16th century village lies just south of Colmar along the vaunted “Route des vins.” Surrounded by 741 acres of vineyards, Eguisheim’s main street is known as Grand’Rue and is lined with picturesque houses adorned with coats of arms. The old ramparts or former watch-path still exists providing an itinerary through narrow streets lined with architecturally interesting houses with balconies, timbered frames and pointed gables.

COLMAR

A jewel of a town, Colmar is the capital of wine-growing Alsace. It is remarkable for its medieval and Renaissance center and its numerous half-timbered mansions and houses. Colmar is also renowned for the beautiful former tanners district along the Lauch Canal called “The Little Venice.” Colmar is also home to the Unterlinden Museum which houses Matthias Grunewald’s famous Issenheim Alterpiece (16th-century) and the Bartholdi Museum dedicated to Colmar’s native son, Frédéric-August Bartholdi, creator of New York’s famed Statue of Liberty.

RIQUEWIHR

Just north of Colmar, the attractive little town Riquewihr —which looks much as it did in the 16th century—lies at the center of Alsace’s wine-growing area and wine route and is famed for its production of Riesling wine. Several notable 16th & 17th century mansions include the “Maison Liebrich” and “Maison Preiss-Zimmer.” The town also boasts the impressive 13th-century Dolder Gate.

HAUT KOENIGSBOURG / STRASBOURG

Near the town of Selestat this vast 12th-16th century fortress was quasi-destroyed in the 17th-century by the Swedes and restored in the 19th century. It is perched on a 2,297-foot high promontory. It is very interesting to visit because it is like a small town—it needed to have the ability to withstand a siege and it also offers impressive views of the Rhine River and surrounding countryside.
