TJ Wilcox

In his cinematic work, photographer and filmmaker TJ Wilcox (MFA 95 Art) collages both original and found 16-millimeter footage to create precise and laconic new works. This methodical appropriation is equally present in Wilcox’s photographs, wherein the artist often re-shoots a spread of images in a magazine or book. In many cases, he then re-uses these still images in his filmic works. An interest in personal narrative and the construction of history is filtered through the artist’s recuperative process to explore the visual narrative of the world as an endless work in progress, created from an interpolation of memory, myth and fact.

Wilcox has been the subject of solo exhibitions at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art, Ireland’s Carthage Hall at Lismore Castle Arts, Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum, Cologne’s Museum Ludwig, the Kunstverein Munich, the UC Berkeley Art Museum, Switzerland’s Kunsthaus Glarus, and London’s Institute of Contemporary Art. His films have been screened at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Tate Modern, London.
