Make to Know: From Spaces of Uncertainty to Creative Discovery

Upending popular notions of innate artistic and visionary genius and, instead, probing the event of discovery that happens through the act of making, in his new book, Make to Know: From Spaces of Uncertainty to Creative Discovery (Thames & Hudson), Dr. Lorne Buchman explores the revelatory nature of the creative journey itself. In contrast to the classic tale of Michelangelo, who “saw the angel in the stone,” the artists, entrepreneurs, innovators and designers featured in this book—from Chris Kraus and Frank Gehry to Zack Snyder, Aimee Bender, and Diana Thater, among many others—talk about knowing their work as they engage in the doing. As a result, Buchman reveals that creativity is rarely a “lightbulb moment” and instead arrives through a process of making and self-understanding.

The Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) invites you to join a conversation with Dr. Buchman as moderated by AICAD’s president and executive director, Deborah Obalil, during which they’ll discuss the implication of the "make to know" process on the delivery of arts and design education, the application to leadership in general, and the impact on institutional structures.

AICAD Presents: Make to Know, will take place on Zoom, Tuesday, March 15 2022 from 10–11 a.m. (PDT)/1–2 p.m. (EDT). Be sure to register in advance. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Lorne M. Buchman is president of ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. He is also a theater director, dramatic literature professor, and author of a book on filmic adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays. His latest book is Make to Know: From Spaces of Uncertainty to Creative Discovery. He hosts Change Lab: Conversations on Transformation and Creativity, a podcast in which he conducts interviews with leading artists, designers and cultural innovators. Buchman previously served on the faculty of University of California, Berkeley. He left that position to become president of California College of the Arts and later Saybrook University. He holds a PhD from Stanford University in Drama and Humanities.

Deborah Obalil has over twenty-five years of experience as a leader in the national arts and culture industry, having led multiple highly acclaimed organizations and served as a well-regarded management consultant to the field.
