Critical reflection is fundamental to art and design education. Art Center’s Department of Humanities and Design Sciences (HDS) works with the studio programs to foster thoughtful and rigorous inquiry across the College.
In HDS, practical and intellectual concerns come together to explore the past, explain the present, and imagine the future. Students are asked beginning in their first term to consider the social and ethical implications of their work.
All undergraduates must take HDS courses in four general areas: Human, Culture, Materials/Environment, and Professional Practice. Through this requirement students encounter the histories of art and design, core academic subjects, and emerging fields of knowledge.
Classes are small and led by expert faculty members. Instructors emphasize critical thinking and verbal communication at all levels; students conduct and evaluate various forms of research.
Topics in HDS are built into the school’s Transdisciplinary Studios and HDS instructors often co-teach sponsored projects and studio electives.
The role of the department also extends beyond curricular offerings. Through special symposia and The Big Picture lecture series, guest speakers and Art Center faculty engage the entire campus community.
