After 30 years of studying origami as his passion, Robert J. Lang gave up his day job as a laser physicist to focus on both the art and science of origami. He is now recognized as one of the world’s leading masters of the art, and his work has been exhibited at numerous museums, included in private and public collections, and featured in documentary films, television commercials, and as a Google doodle.

He is noted for works of great detail and realism, and his repertoire includes some of the most complex origami designs ever created.

A talk and presentation by
Robert J. Lang accompanying
his exhibition in the Williamson Gallery

The last decade of this past century witnessed the emergence of a revolution in the development and application of mathematical techniques to origami. In this presentation, origami artist Robert J. Lang will weave the fascinating tale of how newly-applied geometric processes led to novel concepts of origami folding—solving problems that had long challenged the ancient craft, and that have enabled the creation of origami designs of mind-blowing complexity and realism. Lang will also discuss how these origami design algorithms and theorems have shed light on long-standing mathematical questions and solved practical engineering problems, leading to the creation of safer airbags, gigantic space telescopes and more.

Robert J. Lang is recognized as one of the foremost origami artists in the world as well as a pioneer in computational origami and the development of formal design algorithms for folding. During the course of his work at NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Spectra Diode Laboratories, and JDS Uniphase, he has authored or co-authored more than 100 papers and 50 patents in lasers and optoelectronics as well as authoring, co-authoring or editing 14 books and a CD-ROM on origami. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Caltech, he is a full-time artist and consultant on origami and its applications to engineering problems, and continues to be involved in the world of lasers, most recently as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics from 2007–2010. He received Caltech’s highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award, in 2009 and was elected a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2013.
