Title: Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs

Description

Art Center College of Design is seeking to fill a new position of Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs. In alignment with Art Centerís strategic plan, the Associate Provost will oversee all areas of Faculty Affairs, including supervising all faculty searches, hiring, title and rank designation for faculty; with appropriate stakeholders and committees,†participate in the design, integration and administration of academic policies and procedures; and with the Provost, oversee associated educational support programs and related budgets. As such, the Associate Provost will be a senior member of Art Centerís academic leadership and will have significant impact on the creative and intellectual life of the college. The Associate Provost will work directly with individual faculty, representatives of the faculty and the department chairs, and will oversee and design initiatives that continue Art Centerís commitment to faculty development, teaching, practice and faculty-led research. Working with the Provost, the Office of Academic Affairs and the appropriate Chairs and Faculty, the Associate Provost will also participate in curriculum design, program review and pedagogical best practices, and assist with assessment and accreditation as it relates to student learning. The leadership of the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs will be a key to the institutionís commitment to providing a highly refined and responsive relationship with faculty. The Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs will report to the Provost.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work closely with the Provost, the department chairs and faculty to provide strategic direction and vision for the academic support infrastructure of the College, especially as they relate to faculty experience and development; oversee long-term academic and teaching initiatives, including syllabi development, and student attendance and grading practices
  • Manage the development and implementation of current and future faculty-related academic policies, procedures and systems, including but not limited to: faculty status, sabbatical, titles, and committee responsibilities
  • Manage the faculty promotion review process with department chairs and faculty; review faculty credentials and experience to ensure fairness and equity in hiring, initial grid position, faculty evaluations and incremental salary adjustments
  • With the department chairs, Human Resources, and search committees as appropriate, facilitate the faculty search process for all full-time faculty positions, serve as an ex officio member for all full-time faculty search committees and establish best practices for hiring of a diverse full- and part-time faculty
  • In conjunction with the Enrollment Services office, ensure that department chairs and faculty are informed of planning schedules for classes and curriculum and annual updates
  • Oversee the resolution of faculty contract, load, or pay issues that are not otherwise resolved by the corresponding department or accounting office
  • In collaboration with the chairs of the Student Academic Policy Committee, ensure the appropriate dissemination of academic policy and corresponding practices to the faculty
  • Ensure the facultyís engagement in best practices with regard to informed consent and other human subjects-related policies and procedures
  • Assist the Provost by providing research, analysis, and recommendations regarding academic programs in partnership with the Center for Educational Effectiveness and other relevant offices
  • In conjunction with the Director of Faculty Development, the Director of Educational Technology and the Center for Educational Effectiveness, cultivate faculty engagement in educational assessment
  • Collaborate with the Associate Provost of Student Affairs and other administrators to address student learning issues and concerns
  • Develop and facilitate opportunities for faculty research and interaction with regional, national and international institutions and community partners
  • Participate in the faculty grievance policy as appropriate
  • Participate and volunteer in professional associations including the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (NASAD), the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD), and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)
  • Participate in negotiating resolutions to faculty employment, teaching and curricular issues
  • Participate in establishing policy and resolving issues between faculty and students
  • Collaborate with Associate Provost for Student Affairs, Admissions and Enrollment to establish best practices

Qualifications

  • An advanced or terminal degree from an accredited college or university
  • A minimum of 5 to 7 years of progressively responsible academic administration experience with faculty governance, hiring, status, evaluation, educational policy, external resources, and professional organizations
  • Prior college level teaching experience, preferably in Art and Design and other areas related to Art Centerís core mission
  • A record of current and past educational, scholarly, and/or professional practices
  • Knowledge of best practices for faculty- and student-led research, including IRB structure and function, grant-funding and grant administration/reporting
  • Knowledge of national and regional accreditation requirements (Dept. of Ed., NASAD, WASC)
  • Outstanding managerial and administrative skills
  • Experience in assessment and evaluation of programs, services, faculty and/or staff
  • Well-developed verbal, written, and presentation communication skills
  • Strong analytical and human relations skills
