Description

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director and the direct supervision of the Public Services Librarian, the Library Assistant performs a wide variety of general circulation and public services tasks relative to the general operation of a college library and related work as assigned. † Primary duties at the Circulation Desk include performing general circulation tasks (checking materials in and out, creating library accounts, etc.), providing assistance to patrons with library materials and equipment use, answering ready-reference and directional questions and completing other duties as assigned. Must be willing to train and assist in all Library departments, including Reference, Cataloging, Acquisitions, and Book Processing. †

This is a temporary, part-time position. Hours: Mon, Wed, Thu 1pm to 10:15pm; Fri 10am to 7:15pm. Option to work a five-day work schedule is also available.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Public Services Duties:

  • Direct and assist patrons in locating material; instruct students in using library resources, both electronic and print; answer directional and ready reference questions
  • In the absence of the reference librarian, answer reference questions that are within scope of knowledge and experience, while referring advanced research queries to the Reference Librarian when available; answer telephone and chat forum inquiries; take and transfer messages accurately; assist patrons using computers, printers, scanners, copiers

Circulation Duties:

  • Charge and discharge library materials, maintain and create patron records; process fine payments, place materials on hold, send overdue notices, claim missing materials, note lost materials, maintain library usage statistics
  • Accurately shelve materials, maintain shelf order and appearance, search for missing items, maintain library study areas/bookshelves/periodical displays; maintain library collections, maintain/troubleshoot office equipment
  • Open and close library (specific shifts), following all procedures
  • Assist with storage and inventory projects, at both campuses
  • Direct student assistants when supervisor is absent
  • Participate in staff meetings and system-oriented planning sessions
  • Assist or supervise short-term and long-term special projects to conclusion
  • Assume responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position and policies of the library are performed in a safe, efficient manner
  • Keep supervisor informed of noteworthy occurrences
  • Must commit to 20 hours per week

Qualifications

  • Library Technician Certificate, AA, Bachelorís degree from a recognized college in a field relevant to the Art Center community, or currently enrolled in an accredited MLS program
  • Minimum one year of work experience dealing with the public, or equivalent experience in successful completion of training/course work in office or library practices and principles
  • Knowledge of library organization, materials, services, and policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of design or other art field relevant for Art Center College of Design
  • Knowledge of databases, library automation systems, online library systems, online public access systems, and circulation systems
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with attention to detail
  • Effective interpersonal relationship skills and the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with patrons, faculty, staff and security
  • Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment with proficiency in the use of computers and database software
  • Handle and prioritize multiple tasks working in a fast-paced environment under varying time pressures, pay close attention to details, and assume responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position and policies of the library are performed in a safe, efficient manner
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, and also as a team member
