Title: Managing Director, Library

The Managing Director of the Library is responsible for providing the Art Center community with excellent services and resources in all media for study, studio work, research and teaching. Consistent with our strategic plan, there is also a strongly identified need for this position to help develop and support undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research initiatives with attention to the following: multi-media collections; multi-modal learning in a text-based world; integrating the digital and physical library of the 21st century; building a virtual library with cross-institutional networked resources; digitizing art or design history. The Managing Director also provides leadership and management of the daily operations and administrative functions of the Library, Satellite Library and College Archives.


  • Direct and administer the operation of the College Library
  • Oversee College Archives and South Campus Satellite Library
  • Manage budget to ensure all essential services are provided
  • Interview, hire and supervise a team of library professionals in Acquisitions, Cataloging, Reference and Public Services, Digital Collections, Archives and Cinema
  • Forge good working relationships and outreach to faculty, students, department chairs, Faculty Council, and committees
  • Work effectively with Accounting, Support Services, Facilities, Human Resources, Center for Student Experience, and College administration
  • With Development in seeking and applying for grants, and in reporting results
  • Provide programming, exhibits, orientation instruction, and outreach to students and faculty
  • Facilitate teacher/teacher, teacher/student and student/student team research collaborations within the library and research lab, as well as supporting other institutional learning and research facilities, such as the Writing Center
  • Support and help develop research efforts within the college for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and administrative purposes regarding institutional assessment and accreditation
  • Develop programs for docents; serve as liaison to all college constituencies
  • Plan for acquisition of all Library equipment and computers
  • Budget all Library expenditures for books, magazines, online resources, digital collections, personnel and operations


  • Minimum Requirements: Masterís degree from an ALA accredited Library/Information Systems program (PHD preferred with specialization in Library and/or Information Sciences); BA, BS or BFA degree in art, design, humanities, sciences or related subject
  • On-going engagement with web and digital systems for archiving, collecting, circulating, and accessing. For administration purposes: Microsoft Office and other college-specific applications as necessary
  • Knowledge of current developments in libraries, educational technologies, social media and publishing
  • 5 years of progressively responsible experience in an academic library with demonstrated successful leadership in library administration
  • Demonstrated leadership in building new approaches to library services, educational technologies, social media, or digital resources in the arts
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and motivating staff
  • Evidence of strong commitment to public services
  • Initiative in program development, implementation and project management
  • Ability to work within a collegial framework and to collaborate effectively
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills to effectively serve students, faculty, alumni, staff and outside vendors, colleagues, donors and the general public
