Title: Counselor, Art Center at Night and Saturday High -- part-time

This position provides admissions and guidance counseling, and performs administrative duties for Art Center at Night, Art Center’s continuing studies program, and Saturday High, our art and design program for teens in grades 9–12. The Counselor works with current and prospective students who have scheduled appointments to review portfolios, describe courses, provide guidance in course selection, and discuss career objectives with students and parents.

This is a part-time position, 20–25 hours per week. Regular hours are 4–9pm, Monday through Thursday, with occasional work on some Fridays and weekends.  


Essential Functions

The Counselor provides advice and mentorship to prospective students through portfolio reviews and guidance in course selection in order to help them set or achieve educational goals.

Art Center at Night:

  • Help prospective students select Art Center at Night studio classes necessary to develop skills and portfolio projects that will be applicable to their major course of study
  • Guide students in selecting applicable liberal arts classes and fields basic questions about Art Center’s application process
  • Provide advice on portfolio development; field questions about ACN scholarship requirements; help the Public Programs team collect ACN and Saturday High scholarship portfolios and when required; provide feedback to scholarship applicants
  • Provide advice to professional artists and designers seeking ACN courses to acquire new skills, create new career paths, or take their artwork in new directions
  • Review artwork submitted by students seeking prerequisite waivers (in-person, by email, or by phone)

Saturday High:

  • Assist students and parents in selecting appropriate Saturday High courses
  • Field questions about careers in art and design and Saturday High scholarship requirements
  • Advise students and parents on Art Center degree program requirements; handle inquiries about Art Center’s majors and potential career options in visual arts and design

Additional responsibilities:

  • Assist with administrative duties in the Public Programs office, including phone, voice mail, e-mail and “walk-in” inquiries about ACN, Saturday High, and Art Center’s full-time degree programs
  • Make follow-up calls and emails to prospective and current ACN students and SH students (and parents)
  • Assist with on-campus recruitment activities for Art Center and Public Programs-related events
  • Assist with portfolio reviews at select Art Center-related events in Southern California such as Art Center’s Open House, and local National Portfolio Day events
  • On occasion, assist the Public Programs Outreach Program Manager with local recruitment activities such as college fairs and community events
  • Assist Director, Art Center at Night with curriculum development, catalog prep work and proofing content for the ACN catalog and website
  • Assist with the ACN and Saturday High scholarship review  


  • BA or BFA in Visual Art or Design
  • 2–3 years’ experience as a working artist or designer
  • Prior administrative and customer service experience
  • Must possess strong attention to detail and the ability to learn, absorb and convey new information quickly and accurately
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to work well as part of a team
