Title: Marketing Communications Writer

This position primarily writes original creative and strategic content to attract and inform external constituents:† magazine and social media features, news releases, news articles and e-news briefs, Web site content, copy for student recruitment materials, and all manner of print and digital material for projects that the Marketing and Communications organization is responsible for creating, producing, and delivering.† The Writer also utilizes specialized expertise and independent discretion to shape written works to meet strategic marketing and communications goals. To help the team stay apprised of news and select and develop potential stories, s/he collaborates on media relations efforts and builds and maintains a network of internal sources and story leads.† A crucial but lesser part (less than 50 percent) of the job is to edit, proofread, project-manage, and generally support the expert, timely publication of these projects; s/he fulfills internal/external requests for marketing/communications materials and writing assistance; creates, tracks, and secures content for projects; and collaborates to meet schedules for the creation of print and Web strategically branded marketing materials.†† This position has a diversity of duties and responsibilities that require considerable judgment and responsibilities are often executed without specific direction.

Essential Functions

  • Research and write original, creative content
  • Develop creative concepts to achieve marketing goals
  • Independently seek and develop news, information, and original story ideas from internal sources
  • Conceptualize, edit, proofread, and gather supporting multimedia assets for print and digital projects targeting external audiences
  • Write news releases and assist Director of Communications in media outreach activities
  • Oversee a variety of projects with competing deadlines, manage complex workflow


  • Bachelorís degree is required in journalism/communications or a related field, and a minimum of 7 years of comparable full time work experience; a Masterís degree is preferred
  • Deep experience writing for both print and Web, with a strong track record of published work
  • Subject expertise in the visual arts, design, education, nonprofit marketing, and/or press interaction highly desirable
  • Proven ability to identify strategically, develop, and write professional-level news and feature stories as well as news releases
  • Excellent verbal, written, and personal communication skills
  • Extremely well versed in the principles and practices of English composition and style, including an understanding of the usage of format and style as it relates to a variety of publication needs
  • Proficiency with commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures in publishing, marketing and media relations
  • Stellar proofreading skills; knowledge of AP Style
  • Proven diplomacy skills plus ability to work effectively with others and establish effective client relations
  • Skill and ability secure content from diverse sources to create stories that position the institution in support of marketing and communications goals
  • Excellent attention to detail; strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to enforce deadlines and meet organizational schedules
  • Flexible and able to adapt to changing processes and procedures
  • Persistent in finding answers, tracking down factual information to achieve favorable outcomes
  • Solid judgment and ability to solve problems independently
  • Strategic and creative thinker, solution-focused with a strong commitment to quality
  • Familiarity with image and video usage rights and issues
  • Flexibility, ability to juggle multiple tasks, function well in a fast-paced environment, and meet project deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications in a Macintosh environment; facility with e-communication formats, software and practices; facility with Internet research
