Instructor - Business and Economics

ArtCenter College of Design is looking for faculty candidates to teach and mentor creative innovative global students from the fields of art and design for an entry-level course titled Business and Economics. 

Reports to: Department Chair

FLSA status: Exempt

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience working in a business field
  • Solid understanding of how design fits into the business world and overall economics systems
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to prepare professional written materials
  • Comfortable and able to work and interact with and advise undergraduate level students
  • Knowledgeable and savvy about the current overall Business and Design context
  • Comfortable and able to steward internal and external relationships
  • Autonomous, collaborative and self-motivated


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a teacher in higher education preferred
  • MBA or PHD in Business or Economics and or Education with a focus on Business

Essential Functions

  • The role of this course is to offer students an intellectual foundation in understanding the language and theories around business and economics as well as an ethical foundation in business practices
  • Each topic will be taught with the basic practices and content of business and economics programs however the industries, practices and terminology used in art and design will be closely aligned and expand on each topic
  • The goal is for the instructor to inspire students to be analytical and inquisitive about the business side of art and design, understand and challenge traditional business practices, and begin to develop leadership skills for their respective fields
  • Faculty are expected to maintain an active professional or research practice
  • Office hours for supporting students in coursework or who are applying to grants and other funding opportunities
  • Meet with Faculty Director and Department Chair on occasions

Topics in the course include:

  • Basic concepts of micro- and macroeconomics How does design fit into the overall economy?
  • American and international economics Various economic models and how it relates to the fields of art and design
  • Branding, marketing, and sales
  • Intellectual property, legal and regulatory
  • Financing, cash flow and accounting
  • Business models
  • Business strategy, and design thinking
  • Production Planning
  • Business management and organizational leadership
  • Ethics, business for social good, and business decisions

Mandatory Duty to Report

All employees who know or have reason to know of allegations or acts that violate ArtCenter’s Title IX Policy prohibiting discrimination, harassment, retaliation, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, sexual violence, dating violence, and stalking shall promptly inform the DHR Administrator and Title IX Coordinator, or designee or the Assistant Dean of Students or designee. Physical Demands and Working Environment

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office or classroom setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time viewing computer monitor; interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the work environment, there is regular exposure to fumes, dust and noise.

Physical: The position is generally sedentary. Employees sit most of the time, but may walk or stand for brief periods of time. Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office or classroom setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 20 pounds); to operate modern office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as preparing and reading reports, viewing a computer terminal and other normal office work with or without correction.

Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in the course of normal office communication or exchange ideas with or without correction.
