Facilities Mechanic

Facilities Workers are responsible for performing routine tasks in the maintenance, alteration, and repair of all ArtCenter buildings, related facilities, and equipment.

Beginning fall term 2021, the College will require all persons who want to access the physical campus in person to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  We will also continue to require face coverings, physical distancing, hygiene and sanitation measures as an extra layer of protection against COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses.

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of experience in maintenance and/or building repair on complex systems
  • Possess a valid California Driver License
  • Read, write and understand the English language to be able to interact with staff, faculty and vendors
  • Ability and willingness to work in confined spaces, at heights, outdoors, and perform physical work such as moving and relocating objects up to 50 lbs in weight
  • Flexible to work weekends, nights and respond to emergency repairs as needed
  • Knowledge of work order systems (CMMS)
  • Must exhibit good customer service skills
  • Skill in working independently and following through on assignments
  • Ability to function as a team member and act independently as required by the circumstances
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and distractions
  • Ability to perform tasks in an efficient, well-organized, and timely manner with a minimum level of supervision and under frequent changes in priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to assess situations and problem solve using own judgment
  • Ability to shift priorities and perform duties under tight and changeable deadline; organize and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Knowledge of and ability to use light power tools, able to climb a ladder
  • Skill in use of specialized equipment such as basic hand tools
  • Working knowledge of departmental procedures for ordering, maintenance, and inventory of supplies
  • Customer service-focused individual with excellent written and oral communication skills, detail-oriented, highly organized, able to balance priorities, takes initiative, reliable and resourceful

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree or technical degree from a recognized trade school, or equivalent experience

Essential Functions

Maintenance — 90%

  • Provide complete and timely service on assigned tasks and work orders, which are received verbally, written or via electronic devices
  • Wall restoration and painting including preparatory work for painting projects by washing walls, filling in or smoothing surfaces, and masking areas
  • Operate forklift, grounds vehicles, power tools, hand tools and related landscaping equipment
  • Work with Lead Facilities Mechanic to ensure Maintenance Mechanics are contacted for repairs that require higher skilled work
  • Pick-up and deliver equipment to the appropriate sites, and install equipment
  • Install fire extinguishers, bulletin boards, seismic anchoring devices
  • Repair bathroom vanity equipment, remove or replace plumbing fixtures such as soap dispensers, toilet seats, bathroom hardware, and water faucet washers
  • Repair light fixtures, replace light bulbs and fluorescent ballasts
  • Make minor repairs to office furniture and equipment as well as power washing the exterior of clinics
  • Repair minor roof leaks
  • Repair or replace window, door, or cabinetry hardware. Repair fences and gates
  • Clear stoppages in toilets, sinks, and floor drains
  • Clean bearings, fan housing, fan compartments, drain pans, and machine rooms
  • Clean out sediment traps in waste system
  • Clean roof and patio drains

Other — 10%

  • Perform furniture delivery and setups for events
  • Make decisions involving initiative
  • Other duties as assigned

Mandatory Duty to Report

Physical Demands and Working Environment

This is a full-time position to be performed on-site as a condition of employment.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a shop setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time using shop equipment including computers, viewing computer monitors, hand tools, saws, power tools etc.; interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the work environment, there is exposure to loud noises, chemicals, fumes, dust and heat with the HVAC equipment such as compressors and exhaust fans while utilizing issued safety equipment. This position may also require occasional exposure to outdoor environments, including extreme weather conditions.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an shop setting; to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; including, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, squatting, and twisting; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy  amounts of weight (50 pounds, or team-lift up to 100 pounds); to operate office and shop equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as preparing and reading reports, viewing a computer terminal and other normal office work with or without correction.

Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in the course of normal office communication or exchange ideas with or without correction.
