Audio Visual Technician

This position has responsibilities supporting all events, which use technology across the campus. This includes the pre-production, production, set-up, and take-down of equipment for media events. The position is also responsible for equipment maintenance and its use throughout all campus locations. Support and administration of Zoom falls within the same scope of support. As a member of the Educational Media Services team, the incumbent also serves as a backup to other members to support AV needs. All members are responsible for ensuring that events (whether in a classroom, auditorium, or other location) are handled with the appropriate attention and customer care.

Evening and weekend hours may be assigned for certain events.

Beginning fall term 2021, the College will require all persons who want to access the physical campus in person to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  We will also continue to require face coverings, physical distancing, hygiene and sanitation measures as an extra layer of protection against COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses.

FLSA status: Non-exempt

Salary grade: Salary range $36k to $40k

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in an audio video event setup and support environment
  • Strong knowledge of audio visual equipment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with staff, faculty, students and vendors
  • Ability to prioritize and take direction in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Commitment to provide excellent customer service
  • Must have a sound understanding of safe production practices
  • Must be well-versed in various file-based video formats, to serve as backup to Auditorium Projectionist as needed
  • A commitment to diversity, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within ArtCenter’s diverse communities

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree in related field  such as Multimedia, Audio Visual and/or Digital Communications from an accredited college or university
  • A basic low-voltage electrical background and knowledge
  • Certified Technology Specialist (CTS)
  • Knowledge of inventory control procedures
  • Experience in an educational setting
  • Zoom administration and support
 


Essential Functions

Operational — 55%
  • Incorporate technical, creative, and client requirements in planning events; ensure smooth execution of the event and provide quick and effective response as situational challenges arise
  • Solicit feedback from the client to identify possible areas of improvement for future events
  • Ensure that equipment is completely returned for future use
  • Prioritization of upgrades and/or new installations of classroom or conference rooms
  • Set up and/or provide support at high profile events such as the Board of Trustees, Grad Show and Graduation
  • Transport, assemble, setup and remove A/V equipment for events following proper practices and safeguards
  • Provide basic instruction on the operation of A/V equipment to customers as necessary
  • As assigned, provide input and assistance during vendor installation process including coordination, resource allocation, and quality control
Technical — 40%
  • Responsible for the maintenance, repair and replacement of all classroom technology
  • Serve as a backup for projecting and running various types of Media, including Blu-ray, DVD, 35mm slides, Laser disc, VHS, document camera, DMS, and film (film formats include 35mm and 16mm)
  • Documentation of work process and procedure and user/worker education
  • Inventory control of audio visual equipment located in classrooms, equipment center and replacement stock
Other non-essential duties — 5%
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Physical Demands and Working Environment

This is a full-time on-site position and with a schedule of 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  The position may require flexibility to work a staggered, remote or alternate schedule to meet the demands of the work, which could include weekends or evenings.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office, classroom or auditorium setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time viewing computer monitor; interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the work environment, there is regular exposure to fumes, chemicals, dust and noise.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work and move about in a school setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight (up to 50 pounds); to operate modern office and A/V equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard and electronic diagnostic tools; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as setting up equipment, viewing a computer terminal and other normal technician work with or without correction.

Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in the course of normal business communication or exchange ideas with or without correction.
