Facilities Mechanic

Maintain the building systems such as heating, air and ventilation (HVAC), lighting and electrical, plumbing, and landscaping, along with providing setup and manpower support for various departments.  Also assist with the delivery of materials, equipment and supplies.

Standard hours for this position are 7:30am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday, subject to change with department needs. This position is primarily based at Hillside Campus and will rotate shifts with staff at South Campus.

FLSA status: Non-exempt

  • Associates degree or technical degree from a recognized trade school, or equivalent experience
  • 4 years maintenance and/or building repair on complex systems
  • Possess a valid California Driver License
  • Read, write and understand the English language to be able to interact with staff, faculty and vendors
  • Ability and willingness to work in confined spaces, at heights, outdoors, and to pull and lift objects up to 50 lbs in weight
  • Flexible to work weekends, nights and respond to emergency repairs as needed
  • Knowledge of work order systems (CMMS)
  • Ability to follow through on assigned tasks
  • Must exhibit good customer service skills

Essential Functions

Maintenance — 90%

  • Provide complete and timely service on assigned tasks and work orders, which are received verbally, written or via electronic devices
  • Perform building related repairs including plumbing, maintenance and upkeep of general appearance of the campus interior and grounds
  • Wall restoration and painting
  • Troubleshoot and resolve various HVAC, electrical, and plumbing issues
  • Operate forklift, grounds vehicles, power tools, hand tools and related landscaping equipment

Other — 10%

  • Perform furniture delivery and setups for events
  • Make decisions involving initiative

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a shop setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time using shop equipment including computers, viewing computer monitors, hand tools, saws, power tools etc.; interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the work environment, there is exposure to loud noises, chemicals, fumes, dust and heat with the HVAC equipment such as compressors and exhaust fans while utilizing issued safety equipment.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an shop setting; to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; including, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, squatting, and twisting; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy  amounts of weight (50 to 100 pounds); to operate office and shop equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
