Director, Accounting

Reporting to the Controller, this position will oversee and manage the daily operations and business processes of the accounting office, including supervision of four full-time staff. The incumbent ensures that information is recorded accurately in the College’s ERP system and that all work is completed with timeliness and accuracy while maintaining compliance with current government and College policies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business, from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in all aspects of general accounting
  • Three years of experience  in managing a department, including, project management and supervisory responsibilities
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of accounting concepts and practices
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with an ability to assist others with technical and accounting problems
  • Proven experience to meet deadlines and ensure compliance
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build relationships and teamwork within the department and the College
  • Strong organizational skills and managerial skills; strong attention to detail and high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, with advanced skills in Excel and strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle all information with tact and discretion and recognizes the confidential nature of ArtCenter business
  • Demonstrated experience in and a commitment to diversity, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within ArtCenter’s diverse communities

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience with Ellucian/Colleague student information system or other higher education related software and systems
  • Experience in higher education


Essential Functions

Accounting – 50%

  • Review journals and bank reconciliation prepared by the Staff Accountant
  • Review investment reconciliations and fixed asset schedules on a monthly basis
  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements
  • Supervise preparation of audit schedules as requested by the College’s outside auditors
  • Review general ledger entries and account reconciliations
  • Monitor the daily bank activity and ensure that all transactions are properly recorded to the General Ledger
  • Monitor the College’s donor restricted project and scholarship balances and prepare year-end releases
  • Assist with preparation and review of year end audit schedules and reporting
  • Work with Development Data Management to post all gifts and pledges and at the end of each quarter and prepare the reconciliation of Razor Edge gift postings to the General Ledger
  • Update the Unitization schedule and calculate the annual endowed spending rule

Operations — 40%

  • General departmental leadership and oversight, strategic planning, logistics, events, administrative support to implement operations
  • Oversee performance evaluation process, ensuring consistent use of all applicable policies and procedures; counsel, discipline and make recommendations in terminations, as required
  • Provide clarification and guidance with the interpretation of departmental policies as it relates to various areas of responsibility
  • Supervise the processing and distribution of year-end forms including, 1099's, 1098T's, and 1042S
  • Oversee the functions of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable to ensure billing and payments are processed in an efficient and accurate manner
  • Facilitate training and ongoing education for the Department staff
  • Approve all staff expense reimbursements and student stipend requests

Non-Essential Duties— 10%

  • Maintain memberships and active involvement in applicable professional organizations
  • Serve on college-wide committees
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Demands and Working Environment

This is a full time position. Normal business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The position may require flexibility to work a staggered, remote or alternate schedule to meet the demands of the work, which could include weekends or evenings.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time viewing computer monitor; interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the work environment, there is regular exposure to fumes, chemicals, dust and noise.

Physical: The position is performed in an office setting. Employees stationary most of the time but may move around the office environment for brief periods of time. Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 10 pounds); to operate modern office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Regular and consistent attendance are required for most positions. Ability to travel between campuses.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as preparing and reading reports, viewing a computer terminal and other normal office work with or without correction.

Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in the course of normal office communication or exchange ideas with or without correction.
