Auditoriums Supervisor, Educational Media Services

The Auditoriums Supervisor oversees Educational Media Services auditoriums staff and student workers at the Hillside campus and is responsible for ensuring efficient day-to-day operations within the auditoriums and during events, under the direction and guidance of the Manager, Educational Media Services. Supervisor works closely with the Manager providing regular updates on scheduled classes and events and to provide recommendations to improve the auditoriums for better user experience. In addition, Supervisor can act as a backup projectionist and can assist other members of the Educational Media Services team to support A/V needs. Will travel between campuses as needed.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technology field, or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • 3–5 years of experience in highly intensive job organizing and leading projects
  • Strong knowledge of audio visual equipment, video projection and audio
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with staff, faculty, students and vendors
  • Ability to prioritize and take direction in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Commitment to provide excellent customer service
  • Must have a sound understanding of safe production practices and fire safety regulations
  • Must be well-versed in various file-based video formats, to serve as backup to the Projectionist as needed
  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff
  • A commitment to diversity, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within ArtCenter’s diverse communities
  • Ability to handle all information with tact and discretion and recognizes the confidential nature of ArtCenter business

Preferred Qualifications

  • A basic electrical background and knowledge
  • Certified Technology Specialist (CTS)
  • Knowledge of inventory control procedures
  • Prior experience in higher educationKnowledge of art and design education

Essential Functions

Operations –60%

  • Manage all events, small and large, in the Los Angeles Times Media Center and/or the Ahmanson Auditorium
  • Incorporate technical, creative, and client requirements in planning events; ensure smooth execution of the event and provide quick and effective response as situational challenges arise
  • Manage calendar for classes and events, schedule hours, provide daily and weekly tasks, and oversees the work performed by the Auditorium Specialist, Projectionists and Student Workers
  • Provide weekly status reports on all ongoing installation projects
  • Solicit feedback from the client to identify possible areas of improvement for future events
  • Attending all relevant meetings, creating relationships with the vendors and other departments and ensuring excellent customer service
  • Serve as a backup for projecting and running various types of Media, including Blu-ray, DVD, 35mm slides, Laser disc, VHS, document camera, Betacam, digital Betacam, DVCAM, MiniDV, HDV, and film (film formats include 35mm and 16mm)
  • Adhere to all safety procedures and requirements

Equipment and Vendor Management-35%

  • Responsible for the maintenance of equipment in the LAT and Ahmanson Auditorium
  • Work with outside vendors for equipment and/or support; on-site coordination between the client and/or ArtCenter representative and the staff and/or outside vendor
  • Make purchases when needed to maintain adequate inventory of supplies and expendables
  • Maintain and prioritize list of equipment needed; research cost and availability with vendors
  • Consult directly with faculty and others in the ArtCenter community to determine the needs and goals in the auditoriums
  • Track equipment purchases from inception to reception
  • Establish relationships with a wide range of vendors, distributors, manufacturers, institutions and professional organizations for best solution and to ensure competitive prices

Other Non-Essential Duties — 5%

  • Maintain memberships and active involvement in applicable professional organizations
  • Serve on college-wide committees
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Environment: Must be able to operate a variety of office, shop tools and A/V equipment including computers, mixers, amplifiers, speakers, microphones, projectors, hand tools, electronic diagnostic tools, etc. Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time viewing computer monitor; interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the work environment, there is regular exposure to fumes, chemicals, dust and noise.

Physical: Involves minimal physical effort but may include moving about, standing, reaching, climbing, crawling, squatting, bending, frequent light lifting or pushing/pulling (occasionally up to 50 pounds), dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of office and A/V equipment. Tasks may involve extended periods of time in front of a computer monitor and keyboard. Good visual skills for accuracy and for the reporting and interpretation of data, and effective verbal communication skills to present and respond to data.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as preparing and reading reports, viewing a computer terminal and other normal office work with or without correction.

Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in the course of normal office communication or exchange ideas with or without correction.
